Flowers from a Distant Home
My Body of Work explores my relationship with my mother and the nostalgia of missing her warmth and care while living away from home. Through paintings of flowers from home and school gardens, ink print portraits of my mother, lace prints, paper flowers and silkscreen printing, I reveal the emotional experience of living overseas and being separated from the person who makes me feel safe. The flowers symbolise my mother’s love and care, while fragmented lace layered over her portraits suggests memories that slowly fade with time apart. Rastered words of encouragement from my mother further evoke the comfort and distance of home. By combining painting, printmaking and assemblage, my work invites viewers to understand the longing that comes from living far away from home.
