Necromass

My Body of Work “Necromass” examines how healthy bodies, like living trees, veil their underlying structures. A functioning body conceals its framework, systems, and psychical life. Yet, through deterioration, these hidden structures rupture the surface. In my work, knots and cavities operate as physical manifestations of emotional vulnerability and distorted faces surface from the wood grain, mimicking muscular tissue, neural pathways, and cutaneous aging. Burl-like growths and fungal formations signify accumulated lived experience, while the subterranean root system embodies the subconscious mind in its unobserved form that actively feeds identity. Working directly onto timber exploits the material’s natural aging, and as such, the pressure of ballpoint pen physically alters the surface into hues of yellow, pink, and blue to evoke trauma.
