In my body of work, I use drawing and sculpture to explore languishing: a condition of emotional flatness. Incorporating references to fourth-century monastic writing on acedia and T. S. Eliot’s The Hollow Men, my work presents this condition as historically persistent rather than solely contemporary. Using charcoal and ink wash, I build each face through tonal accumulation so that expression emerges slowly and resists immediate reading. This close attention is contrasted with the repetition of cut figures around the frames, suggesting the scale at which languishing can pass unnoticed. This work serves as a provocation for the audience asking them to consider how they exist in this world and how we relate to each other.
